Our Roots Run Deep – About West Kelowna

Welcome to West Kelowna (affectionately known by locals as “the Westside”). Our community has always been appreciated for its quiet beaches, rolling hills of orchards, and fantastic outdoor activities. The people here are proud of their rich history in agriculture, of the feisty Fur Brigade Traders and of their relationship with the suknaqix/syilx People. The small sleepy town that once was has grown into a thriving independent municipality that has a ‘rural sophistication’ feel to it with vineyards, wineries, summer concerts, trails, agricultural pursuits, along with shops that offer the familiar comforts of home.

Spectacular Vistas – West Kelowna has some of the most photographed landscapes in the Okanagan Valley. At the heart of our region lies Mt Boucherie, an ancient dormant volcano that created a dynamic, mineral-rich terrain. This unique volcanic soil has primed the land for growing premium grapes. These vineyards, coupled with lake views and vistas make for some spectacular pictures along the Westside Wine Trail.

Deep Agricultural Roots – In West Kelowna, farm-to-table isn’t just a trend, it’s a way of life. Our deep-rooted culinary traditions are a key reason our region earned a prestigious UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy Designation. You can taste this rich legacy along the Westside Farm Loop. Stop by the historic Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park to see where BC’s nut-growing industry began or explore sun-ripened orchards, roadside fruit stands and vineyards with some of the oldest vines in the valley.

To discover the original roots for our gastronomy, visit Sncəwips to learn about traditional food, indigenous plants and harvesting practices of the sukniqinx/syilx People, hosted on Westbank First Nation land. From ancient food traditions to fresh-picked orchard fruit and award-winning wines, West Kelowna offers many different culinary experiences.

First Nation Peoples – West Kelowna is located on the unceded traditional territory of the suknaqinx/syilx People. The sqilxʷ people have lived in the Kelowna (kiʔlawnaʔ), West Kelowna and Westbank (stqaʔtkʷəɬniwt) area from time immemorial. Their rich history is passed down from each generation through ancient oral stories (captikʷəɬ). As you explore West Kelowna you will see the Okanagan language (nsyilxcen) and culture woven into the community through signs, public art and symbols.
